Condolence: I've worked with Trygve on several ships. I was the Maitre D' and I can honestly say that he was my favorite captain. He treated everyone with respect and did not use his bars and power to intimidate people, like other captains...I wish his family the strength to accept God's will and the peace and grace needed to continue life without his physical presence. He will live with us forever in our spirit. God Bless You!

Condolence: Dear Colin and Billy:

We have never met, but your Dad and I served together on the Southward in California. I was the Systems Manager. He was a great friend and I was very sorry to learn of his passing. There are so many fond memories I have of our times together. I especially remember the Captain’s Reception on every cruise. The band would begin playing “Anchors Aweigh” and your Dad would walk down the to the front of the theater and start off each one the same way. He would introduce himself and then say, rather sheepishly: “As you can probably tell, I’m not from around here. I’m from North Carolina!” It was at this point that he had each passenger in the palm of his hand and they willingly stayed there throughout the cruise! I never heard ANY passenger say anything negative about him.

The last time I saw your Dad we were both at Miami Heart Hospital. I had gone in there to have some tests after having a bad reaction to my chemotherapy treatments and found out that your Dad was there. I went to his room and surprised him. We visited for about ½ hour when I had to return to my ship, the Leeward. I lost contact with him and when I finally found out where he was (I believe it was the Jade) he had just left on vacation. Then I got busy closing down the Leeward and then going to the Norway and finally the Dream for my final contract. I left NCL in March 2000, just 2 months shy of 8 years. My time on the Southward were my best contracts. I was fortunate enough to be on the ship when it was sold to Sun Cruises and became the Seawing and sailed the Mediterranean. It may have been the same ship, but her personality changed and was nothing like the Southward!

Please accept my sincere condolences. I shall remember you and your Dad in my prayers.

Condolence: To the Vorren Family: Our prayers are with you at this very sad time. I had the privilege of serving under Trygve on the Norway, Southward, Dream and Crown. We had the luck of running into him on the Gem two summers ago in Greece; we had a wonderful time catching up. He will be missed by all the crew members who served under his command; he was one of the most respected Captains to have ever sailed the high seas. With Deepest Sympathy, Dottie Kulasa & Tom Drake

Condolence:

In loving memory of Captain Trygve Vorren

On 2 August 2011 we lost one of our biggest hearts in the company:

Captain Trygve began his career with Norwegian Caribbean Lines in 1980 on board the S/S Norway as a 1st officer. He was known as a very good mate and a skilled tender-boat driver. His skills were highly spoken of and he was considered to be the first “tender-expert” on board. One can say that his skills and lessons influenced today’s technique that we use on board our azipod ships as this is the same technique he introduced... He was notorious for this skill and became widely talked about. As his career progressed he was promoted to Safety officer and was one of the people who figured out the “Code-systems” that are also we widely used today.
He then became a Chief. Officer and moved ships to work on board the Skyward and Starward. He returned to the S/S Norway as a Staff Captain, and later became the Captain.

For all of us that have had the pleasure of sailing with him during these years, he was always known as a solid officer, a great friend to all and was always fair. He was always willing to go the extra mile to do what was needed for the guests, the crew and the ship. He set an example for us all to follow.

Captain Trygve Vorren died a profound seaman and he died a friend to a magnitude of seafarers. He never asked to be respected rather handed it out first. He therefore was one of the most adored people in the fleet. Captain Trygve had a way of standing up for the crew, in a way that was admirable. He rose against his own superiors and managers, always fighting for the small guy not able to fight for himself due to his rank or flank. He never chose sides of a crisis and solved it in his dignifying way. He was known for his humble view to life and his stable demeanor that made you feel welcome to approach.

Who could forget his laugh, his calm voice, that strong Norwegian accent!
He taught some of us, he guided many of us and he supported all of us. He always took the time to get to know his crew and was well liked and respected throughout the fleet by all: “He truly brought us all a home away from home.”

Our Doctor on board, Jacob, states what we all feel: “I for one person will always talk about him, remember him as my first Captain and I many times heard people calling him ``My Captain`` As a Doctor it really broke my heart when joining him on this journey of life that he ended up loosing but he told me the last time I saw him that it will be the first time he had to deal with this kind of storm and he was ready to brave the waves as they come. He was indeed an admirable and brave soul.”

Our hearts are sad at the loss of our friend and Captain, and friend he certainly was to all his NCL crew family on all of the ships he has sailed on. There are only a handful of people who come into your world, and touch your life in a special way. Some of the people are just flickers of light during a long life, while others are consistent glows for years. This perfect Norwegian gentleman had a unique way of bring calm to all around him and never have we experienced him losing his temper or being short with anyone. His vast experience and calm temperament made him easy to approach and I am sure if we had to sum up Trygve in one phrase it would be” its been a pleasure and honour to have met him.”
His accent charmed the guests although some were heard to ask, “What did the Captain say?” But what he did say always did make perfect sense and full of wisdom, a long pause, and then that familiar voice which we all came to know so well and love.

Never has a bad word been heard against him, and that is a rare quality in one who has to make such tough decisions.

Trygve will be remembered in our hearts and minds for many years to come. If we emulate his standards we won’t go far wrong in life.

Trygve we miss you. You have graced our lives more than you will ever know. God bless and the seas will never be the same without you..

May his body and mind rest in peace and may his spirit sail the oceans with us as I am sure he would not have wanted anything else in life.

From his sea family to his family and friends on land. Our hearts and thoughts go out to all of you.

Norwegian Epic 6 August 2011.
