To all of Don's family: I'm so sorry that I missed the service. I would like to have met all of you. Believe it or not, I was a student at North Knox High School when Don was assistant principal and graduated in 1965 I believe just before he became principal. My mother, Dorothy Lawlis, taught math there and was quite fond of Don. She passed away four years ago. I was able to meet with Don a couple of times when I realized that he was living in Brevard and we had quite a nice reunion. I have been retired here since 2003 and was delighted to see that he lived here as well. My condolences to all of you and know that he was always viewed as a good educator and a good man. When my father Donald and mother Mary Martha retired in 1988, they moved back to Martha’s parents’ Coen and Corinne Batman house, where David and Barbara Voglesong live today in English Indiana. My father’s night vision was not so good, so when they had to drive to the nearest big city Louisville in Kentucky, they had to watch for the right exit from the interstate highway circle, called “Watterson Expressway” which makes a circle around Louisville. Sometimes they would miss the right exit and then mother would count how many “laps” they drove around Louisville’s “Galt House-Hotel” on the Ohio River. We gave my father a nickname for driving was “Mr. McGoo” the cartoon of an old man who always drove lost and confused.

When I had just moved into my first apartment in 1979 after my college graduation, my parents, Donald and Mary Martha came to visit me there at West Lake Arms near to the Speedway in Indianapolis. My father wanted to know where to empty the trash can and I told him that there was a garbage receptacle behind my apartment. He returned to me with the full trash can and said he could not find it. So I went back with him and saw my pretty neighbor woman sunning in her bikini behind my apartment house. That is when I discovered that my father was "Temporarily Blinded" by this beautiful young woman in her orange bikini, such that my dad could not see the garbage receptacle!

Once our mother Mary Martha, did not feel like going food shopping, since she did not like to drive the car. So she decided to send father Donald alone to go food shopping with a carefully prepared list of food products. Our daddy returned from shopping with only one item, and it was not even on mother's list. He brought only a bag of dried beans. Mother asked where were all of the other items on the list ? Father replied that all we needed as a family was this bag of dried beans, and nothing more! After this episode, mother never trusted father for food shopping, so my big brother David or I got the honor of food shopping for mother with her list and permission to buy cokes and ice cream too.

I remember our first trip to Yellowstone National Park. I had warned my dad about feeding bears from watching the cartoon “YOGI BEAR at Jellystone Park”. We had rented a cabin and sure enough a bear stood behind my father waiting for my dad to unload the food from our car trunk (just like Yogi Bear waiting for a Picnic Basket). I never saw my dad run so fast in my life. The bear had no chance to beg!

CPL Donald Voglesong carried and fired the mortar (small artillery piece) for his platoon in Company F of 422nd Infantry Regiment at Schoenberg, Belgium during the "Battle of the Bulge" in December, 1944. The 422nd Regimental Commander surrendered his regiment when they had run out of ammunition, surrounded by Panzer tanks.

Dear Grandpa Don, Thank you for the summers spent fishing...hiking cross-country just to get to the perfect spot to enter the creek...wading up Bogard and Blue with our gear, keeping cool in the creek waters on hot summer days. Thanks for instilling in me the love of the perfect game, golf. Thanks for the trips to Holiday World. Thanks for the advice you gave..."Find something you love to do and do that for the rest of your life". Above all, thanks for the memories. Donald Voglesong came to visit his battlefield at Schoenberg Belgium where he was captured as a US Army Infantry Soldier in the US 106th Infantry Division in December, 1944, during the "Battle of the Bulge". He was interned for the remaining 4 months of World War II as a German Prisoner-of-War (P.O.W.) at Stalag 9-B in the village of BadOrb (which is located east of the large city of Frankfurt, Germany. Donald Voglesong was awarded the US Army - Combat Infantryman Badge (C.I.B.) for his military service in World War II.
