To the Smith family, It’s been almost a year since I sent your family expressions of my deepest sympathy in the loss of Penny. The first year anniversary of the death of a loved one is difficult. At this time the memories of both their death and memories of their lives, flood the heart and minds of those who loved and miss them so much. As you go through this one year anniversary, God will help you, if you ask Him. —Psalm 72:12-14. Keep praying for Holy Spirit. You will feel relief in time, as God replaces grief with joy, anguish with peace. (Matt. 7:7-11) Soon God’s Kingdom, which we pray for, will bring an end to our enemy death and signal the time when our loved ones will be resurrected; reunited with us. – John 5:28, 29. Sincerely,

We aren't sure who Pat G is who left the last condolence, but I wanted to say that her words do not represent my Mother's beliefs nor who she was as a person. The family is of course grateful for condolences, but anyone who knew Mom would have known that she would prefer non-religious messages left here. Thank You.

Where do I find the strength and the words to write a tribute to my Mom? There are so many things I would like to say that it would take books! But it all boils down to the great love we had for each other, firstly as a child and then as an adult. She was ALWAYS there for me, no matter what my current crisis ( and I have had many!) and supported me 100%.She was kind, caring and the best mother anyone could wish for. I have tried to be the best daughter she could have wished for, and at this time I am happy to say that I think I achieved that by being there for her every step of the way during her illness and sadly her death on Tuesday morning. Mom was more like my best friend. I used to call or email every day and we had long chats. I used to enjoy the fact that with us both being nurses, she would understand my trials and tribulations of work and help calm me down after a rough shift! I loved coming up here to NC to see her, and loved the times she visited me in South Florida and Orlando. We even went to Disney World several times this year! I just cant imagine my life without her....but as I do with my Dad, I will always feel that she is hoverring above me, and KNOWS what is going on and I will still be able to share my thoughts and feelings. There is nothing more I can say, other than I loved her more than words can say, and will miss her so much, My heart is breaking, but I know she is in a better place with her beloved husband Bill. Rest in eternal Peace Mom,,,,,,,,,,,I love you,

My Mom...One of a kind. She was a caring soul who's main concern all her life was the welfare of her family, especially her daughters. She constantly worried about whether we had had a decent meal, were warm enough, had slept well or had worked too hard. All this came before her own needs even as her health failed. She was an independent woman who right up to her final days insisted on sticking to her daily routines and getting through her list of daily activities despite having to slow down a little more each day. Mom had an exciting life! She was a young girl in England during WW2, and had to escape to a bomb shelter in the back yard with her gas mask and canary when the sirens went off. She was evacuated to Canada at age 13 via convoy dodging German U boats and stayed there for 4 years away from her family. When she returned to the UK she became a student nurse, studying at the Radcliff Infirmary in Oxford. She eventually became a midwife and would ride around on her bicycle delivering babies! She continued in Pediatrics and had a long and rewarding nursing career. She met my father, Captain William G.Smith while serving as a ship's nurse for Cunard Lines. They fell in love and the rest is history. They had over 50 happy years together, traveling the world, and moving their young family from England to the Bahamas, and eventually to the USA, where they retired to the mountains of North Carolina. They welcomed 4 grand children and two great grand children and enjoyed their step family, including Maddy, whose smile Mom adored. We recently welcomed Jill Williams Lilly into the family when Jill married my step son Scott, and Mom was so happy to see the beginning of their new family life together. Mom and Dad loved hiking as their health allowed, trips to the beach, long drives watching the fall leaves and of course, family gatherings. After my father died in 2010, my mother split her time between living with my husband Chester and I in NC, and my sister in Florida, and lived life to the fullest. she enjoyed trips to Disney, music concerts, and even attended a protest downtown! She followed the news and had very strong political opinions while remaining open minded and non judgmental, always concentrating on those in need, equality and fairness, and the welfare of society as a whole. She also had a passion for animals in need. She loved our rescue dogs, Max and Gracie, my sister’s pug Ace and loved to visit the dogs at Pet Smart who needed a home, wishing she could take them all home with her. Finally, she loved an English cup of hot tea. This was the very last beverage she enjoyed and finished it by saying “lovely.” She also loved her Starbucks Vanilla Lattes every Saturday afternoon and pizza with a glass of Riesling from Barley's in Asheville on Sunday evenings. The staff there had missed her smiling face over the past few weeks and got her a bouquet of flowers and a card because they were thinking of her. She was loved by many people, quite a few back home in England, and of course, her loving family. She even had a Facebook following! We will never forget you Penny Smith. The best Mom and Grandma anyone could ever have....We will always treasure your memory and will live on with your guidance for the rest of our days. We are who we are because of you...

Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. Death is the enemy of all mankind, yet when it touches us personally, few find the comfort they search for. And death itself leaves so many with unanswered questions. Many have found comfort in the pages of God's Word the Bible (2 Corinthians 1:3, 4). In God's word we find the promise that we can be reunited with our loved ones (John 5:28,29; Acts 24:15). The Bible also tells us where this happy reunion will take place (Psalm 37: 11, 29). The God of the Bible will eliminate death forever (Isaiah 25:8; Revelation 21:3,4).
