Has it really been a year already? It seems like both yesterday and a lifetime ago that we officially celebrated Malcolm's life. I continue to celebrate his life on a daily basis- to look at things a bit differently, ask more questions, and to learn new things. It doesn't get easier, does it? My love to his family and friends and thank you for all you have done to keep his spirit alive.

I met Malcolm whilst taking shelter in a backstreet bar from a Transylvanian rainstorm ( that's Transylvania, Romania). He came over to our table, slapped down a copy of The Brothers Karamazov and asked if we had an opinion on the Pevear and Larissa translation. What an opener! By the time the storm was over we had drunk all the wine in the bar (really). We had to pay the bar bill as Malcolm had lost his wallet. Malcolm was mortified and insisted we met him for dinner later so he could return the compliment. We did not need to be asked twice. Malcolm was the most amazing company, intelligent, questioning, curious about everything and everybody. He was great fun too, not least when the joke was on him. As it happened we ended up paying for dinner too as it turned out that, when Malcolm returned to the hotel to retrieve the lost wallet he had also lost the trousers his wallet was in! He did manage to treat us to breakfast the next day, and told us many many stories, including his theory that dogs were the saviours of mankind. I still repeat his stories to this day, particularly the dog one. Here in the UK no one I know has not heard about Marvelous Malcolm. He spoke with great affection of his home, his family, Tracy, his friends and colleagues. I'm sure now, more than ever, you all realise how blessed you were to have him in your lives. We promised Malcolm we would meet again in New York, but never got around to it. Life really is too short. I hope to learn from his spirit and zest for life. The next time I am offered the opportunity for adventure ( or to drink a bar dry) I will do it without hesitation, for Malcolm. Malcolm; the pleasure and the privilege was all mine. X

He was the original "Most interesting man in the world". He could talk on any topic, was interested in everything from astrophysics to anemones. He had an infectious laugh and was the most spontaneous person I ever met. Who else can I call to plan a trip to Easter Island in a week? I'll miss him. I am forever grateful he was my friend. My love to his wonderful family- he adored you all so much.

It saddens me that he has past. I interacted with him through the DSS court system. He was very dedicated to the cause of “The Best Interest of The Child.” The courts will miss his court decorum. As a fellow New Yorker we shared many guffaws’. Many people cross your path in life, some are remembered and many are not. Malcolm will be remembered. Jim Gensch

Story shared: Courthouse tale

Malcolm approached me one day in the hall of the Courthouse. He always was an eager conversationalist but this day, I had motions to file and wanted to get outta Dodge. Anyway, Malcolm talked photography, Shane etc. I wanted to get on with my day. I don't know how we ended, but in the course of things he told me that years ago a Doctor diagnosed him with a terminal disease. He stated that he always imagined such news would strike to the core and be, perhaps, the most shattering news one could hear in life's course. He found the diagnosis to be somewhat less than that. He said he reflected on things, considered the life he lived and felt, "Meh. I've lived a great life; if this is all there is, I'm thankful. So be it." He stated he was surprised how easy he accepted the diagnosis. I wonder if there was more here, but no matter. I share this tale of Malcolm so that all who care about him may know he was thankful for his life and he seemed to personally believe himself to have been blessed. I am thankful he shared this with me. - Todd

Mal so deeply touched the lives of many. I haven't seen him for many years but I do remember that some of our last conversations were about our shared passion for acting. Though I never saw him on stage, it was clear to me that he would command a stage. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I know Mal will be sorely missed. I have two very distinct memories of Mal… 1. As I turned 17 he got me all excited about an Austin Healey he had parked in Grandpa’s driveway. It was white, it ran, it was a convertible, and I’m sure it needed a lot of work I could neither do, or afford. He was willing to sell it to me at a steal and I seriously (as seriously as I could at 17) considered buying it. Well…I ended up in a Ford LTD II Station Wagon but the experience left me with an understanding of how Mal turned passion and enthusiasm turned into pure enjoyment. 2. As the age of 23 I stayed with Mal in San Francisco for a few days on a cross country road trip. Our evenings were spent talking and debating topics ranging from “How to get a giant Ficus Tree out of his apartment” to “Quantum physics and why some light particles (or was it light waves) passed through glass while others were reflected?” When I left I was again reminded of what passion, enthusiasm, and enjoyment looked like. Now that he is gone I’d just like to say THANKS MAL!

Mal was one of the Youngs that I got to know REALLY WELL almost 50 years ago when he entertained me while Hap was working on the fishing boats. I have great memories of hanging out on Grandma and Grandpa Young’s sun porch with Mal patiently attempting to teach me chess. When I think of Mal, I remember fondly his great sense of humor, intelligence, and wonderful laugh. My thoughts are with all of his family who were so fortunate to call Mal their son, big brother, nephew and cousin.

Malcolm was a man who threw himself fully into many pursuits, living a full life in his 60 years. I am privileged to have learned so much from him. From the Torre opening to existentialist philosophy, he captivated me with his knowledge, passion, generosity and truth. As I chased his white head of hair down the streets of New York City in the early 80s, trying to keep up with him and his long legs, he never stopped espousing: how to take care of ferrets, how to set up an effective dark room, how to really "see" the photographs at MOMA, how to read Waiting for Godot with levity, how to shift gears in his Toyota land cruiser without pulling a stomach muscle. In California, when he opened his home to me, he showed me that California is truly the "right" coast. I was molded by my brother in all of the best ways. I will miss our conversations. I will miss my life long connection with this great man. Condolences to all whose lives he touched.

To me he was always "Mal". A very special person-his range of interests included travel, wilderness adventures, cars, photography, chess, debates with friends and family -- always companied by a sense of humor. His willingness to share these talents with nieces and nephews, sisters and friends was beautiful to watch. We loved him lots and there will be a big void. Carol Young
